sacred symbol

The symbol emerged from a Native American shamanic trance using a rattle, experienced by my friend (he commissioned this). He described the symbol, the octagon surrounding it, and the lightning, and the rest grew from my own meditations. The two angelic figures above are of the same species as "Icarus". They are channeling a healing energy from their hearts. The black background seems to suggest this vision emerging from the aetheric void we can enter when we close our eyes and follow our imagination.

My friend felt this to be a symbol of healing and protection for him to use as he begins working at a hospice. I did my best to discover these qualities in myself while creating the drawing, and I hope this energy comes through, even minutely, to the viewer.

This epic took months to complete and is my largest drawing on black (~15"x19"). It is also the first in which I use watercolor, which I have discovered to be an easy way to add interesting textures over large areas.
